DU-TER-TE! DU-TER-TE! DU-TER-TE!  The whole gym filled with educators and leaders from different schools were united as they cheered the name of their city mayor.  You could feel goosebumps from the loud excitement of everyone in the gym as the beautiful mestiza woman, who is also the country’s First Daughter of the President, turned heads and, for a moment, stopped the program as she walked towards the stage.
It was October 5, 2017, the World Teachers Day, the culmination of the National Teachers’ Month, where secondary teachers gathered at the Alumni Multipurpose Gym of Davao City National High School, and was graced by the presence of Davao City’s dear Mayor “Inday” Sara Zimmerman Duterte.

GMA primetime queen, Marian Rivera, and the cast of the action fantasy drama series “Super Ma’am”, met the ALS (Alternative Learning System) Learners of Davao Central District last Saturday, September 30, 2017 at Kapitan Tomas Monterverde Sr. Elementary School.

In a very rare opportunity, ALS Learners (Saturday Learning Sessions) were able to meet and greet the Kapuso stars: Bubay, Matthias Rhoads, Marian Rivera and Jerald Napoles. Joining the ALS Learners are selected Elementary learners from the host school.
Learners couldn’t hold their excitement as each Kapuso star was introduced. Giggles filled the room as the casts appeared on stage. The stars, who went straight from Davao International airport to Kapt. Tomas Monteverder Sr. Elementary School, were set to do a show at one of the Malls in Toril. Rivera however wanted to see the ALS learners in relevance to the newly-aired show “Super Ma’am” and the celebration of the World Teachers’ Day.

A dance number for the guests was presented by all participating learners and teachers to which Rivera gamely danced some steps too, saying she plays the same song with daughter.

One very lucky fan and an ALS learner, Rhealyn Villamero, also had the chance to read a personal letter of thanks and admiration to her “idol”. In response, the actress gave her words of appreciation and what every fan would love to have,  hug.

Marian Rivera who portrays a Super Hero and a Teacher in the series acknowledged the roles that teachers play in educating our youth. The actress inspired the learners to value teachers saying “Proud ako sa mga Teachers. Mahalin ninyo ang inyong mga guro. Makinig kayo sa inyong mga guro dahil para sa inyong mga kabataan ang kanilang ginagawa”.

And because learners affirmed Rivera’s encouragements, the primetime queen along with other Kapuso stars, agreed to have photo opportunities with everyone in the room.

GMA Davao appreciates the coordination made with Education Program Supervisor-ALS, Janete B. Esteban, saying they look forward to future arrangements on appearances of Kapuso stars with the latter; and with the School Principal, Maria Epifania M. Villa, for hosting the short event and for the active participation of the learners and teachers.

DepEd Davao Kadayawan Float: A Winning Debut Entry PDF Print E-mail

By: Edmund Superada

altWhile the marching mandate for the Department of Education (DepEd) is accessibility and continuous improvement of the quality of basic education, it has likewise embraced the responsibility towards the preservation and protection of the environment and indigenous culture.
As a public learning institution, DepEd sees the importance of a balanced and livable habitat as one of the contributing factors of efficient and effective learning. Environmental degradation and a slowly waning Filipino culture and traditions have become a growing concern as the country slowly inches closer towards the modern era.

This premise prompted DepEd Davao City Division, for the very first time, to answer the call for participation in the Pamulak Kadayawan, a contest of well ornamented floats featuring the bountiful flora and fauna of the city with the entry title: K3K – K-12 Para sa Kinaiyahan, Kultura, og Kaugmaon.

As a profound way of educating the people of their cultural heritage and topography, the said government agency poured their best efforts headed by Dr. Maria Ines Asuncion, Schools Division Superintendent, together with the dynamic Public Schools District Supervisors Chairman Dr. Wenefredo Cagape, Dr. Johnito Galan, and Dr. Filipinas Samblingo, and Edmund Superada, Float Designer and Production In-charge.

The intricate design elements and the masterful craftsmanship paved the way for Silver Award besting other 20 entries in Gamay Category in this year’s Kadayawan sa Davao floral float parade.

The flaming torch boded the dissipation of the darkness of ignorance which is believed to be the root cause of our worsening environment and fading identity as true Filipinos. The mountain and waterfalls show the perfect landscape the city could offer. The plants and flowers signify the lush vegetation that is undeniably beyond compare.
The float depicts the DepEd’s K-12 Curriculum, blended with cultural and biodiversity, as well as a representation of the harmonious co-existence of the tri-people of Davao and Mindanao in a shared environment. The symbolism characterized by the Kindergarten for Elementary, the Junior High School, and the Senior High School, representing the 4 Tracks of Senior High School portrayed to be in the frontline as DepEd extends its share in the effort to preserve, and promote Philippine culture and the arts, as well as the seemingly endless struggle to safeguard our threatened environment.

The DepEd Davao City Division’s participation spelled out the magnanimous support to the city government towards its worthwhile initiatives that truly raise the level of cultural and environmental awareness which leads to developing stronger, more united and resilient Davaoenos, ever ready for the challenges ahead.
