WHAT else is new? Reigning champion Davao City Athletic Association (Dcaa) Durians defended its overall title by hauling a total of 107 gold medals, 86 silvers and 78 bronzes in the 2016 Davao Region Athletic Association (Davraa) Meet that concluded in Tagum City on Thursday.

Host Tagum City placed second with a 60-58-52 medal count while 44-47-45 Panabo City took the third spot. Trailing behind were 28-27-41 Davao del Sur, 21-21-34 Digos City, 20-15-59 Davao del Norte, 13-32-55 Compostela Valley, 10-12-19 Davao Oriental, 2-8-10 Mati City and 1-0-5 Island Garden City of Samal.

Davao City swept all golds in team events including elementary and secondary girls softball, elementary boys baseball, secondary and elementary boys basketball, elementary and secondary football football, girls futsal and elementary and secondary girls volleyball, among others.

Department of Education (DepEd) Davao City Division sports coordinator Alma Cifra said, "Davao team really played with a heart with the inspiring command of our Schools Division Superintendent to get all the golds."

Davao City's Ewee de Leon-coached elementary booters thrashed Panabo City, 5-0, in their finals match held at the Davao del Norte Sports and Tourism Complex. Raphael Balan scored on a hat trick to lead the Durians' charge as teammates James Paje and Naz Rafaele Pascual made one goal each.

The Dabawenyos of coach Albert Ryan "Abing" Lim, however, survived a tight 2-1 victory over Tagum City in the secondary boys football championship game behind John Mark Diamat's goals.

"Close game. Last two minutes ang first goal, ang second goal five minutes of the second half. I credit the win to the boys," said three-peat Davraa champion coach Lim who thanked the parents and the Davao Football Association for their support to the team.

He also thanked assistant coach Alex Adolfo, goalkeeper coach Ronoel Garfin, junior assistant coaches Imardino Polo and Archemides Ligaray and physical therapists Jun Calixto and Rolly Tan.

Over at the Energy Park, the Crossing Bayabas National High School-bannered Davao City's secondary girls softball team shutout Tagum City, 12-0, in five innings behind ace pitcher Irene Lumanas.

Softball coach Willie Bayocboc, in an interview with Sun.Star SuperBalita, said he was confident to retain their crown having a complete line-up.

"In the Palarong Pambansa, we target the championship since star players of our strong rival teams already graduated. We were just fourth last year," Bayocboc said in the vernacular.

Davao City's elementary girls softball squad also bagged the gold after beating Compostela Valley, 7-5, while Davao City's elementary boys baseball team also clinched the gold by whipping Compostela Valley, 12-0.

Meanwhile, the Kabacan Elementary School-laden Davao City elementary girls volleyball also pocketed the gold over Davao del Norte, 25-22, 27-25.

The Davao City secondary boys basketball team, for its part, came from behind to edge Compostela Valley, 75-71, at the Rotary Gym.

The champion teams will represent Davraa to the Palarong Pambansa slated April 10 to 16 in Albay. (With MSR)
